The marimba has its origins in Africa, where early versions of the instrument were developed by various Bantu-speaking cultures. These early marimbas were made with wooden bars placed over resonators, often gourds, and were played with mallets. The instrument was brought to Central and South America by enslaved persons during the colonial period, where it evolved further, particularly in Guatemala and Mexico.
In Latin America, the marimba was adapted using wooden resonators and later metal tubes, which enhanced its rich, warm sound. Today, the marimba is a key instrument in traditional and contemporary music, blending African rhythmic heritage with Latin American musical traditions.
